Design Philosophy

My philosophy and design practice are rooted in community work and the inclusion of local workers. The production of my designs takes place in Tlacotalpan Veracruz in Mexico. Tlacotalpan is a small community with about 8,000 people; because of the weather there, it is nearly impossible to use iron in buildings and furniture, which made local woodworkers develop a very particular technique, which resulted in a beautiful quality in their work. I was born and raised in Leon Guanajuato, known for leather work and shoemaking. I am deeply proud of my Mexican roots and speak highly of my city, and I found it essential to merge the artisanal labor in both cities into something I could translate into my language.

I am also a firm believer that the way I design is a reflection of what I admire and where I've been. That, at the same time, speaks to where I am headed. My motor when I design is an understanding that designers shape the everyday. We give identity to the everyday and by doing so we share ourselves with our users, we create the items they hold closer to themselves.
